Evangelism/Church Planting/Sports Camp

Continue to assist Southwinds Church in the fast-growing southern region of Calgary through servant evangelism and peewee t-ball camps. We will also help prepare for another new church to launch September 2009. For more details go to www.southwindschurch.ca

Team Canada 2009 arrived safely back in Greenville on Saturday, July 25 after a great mission trip to the Calgary area. Groundwork and relationship building over the last four years were obvious as we continued to reach out to neighbors in four booming neighborhoods.  While attending worship at the Southwinds church plant Sunday morning, we connected with a mom from last year's camp who has since been baptized, and we witnessed a baptism in the lake at Auburn Bay's clubhouse right after the worship service.

A morning t-ball camp and barbecue in Cranston drew 38 preschoolers and their families, while camp and a barbecue in Lake Chapparal drew over 40 children and their families.  The Southwindsstaff took a big step forward this year by providing a devotional time for the players and families.  Every day these families heard that the Bible is God's word and all of it is true.  They learned about qualities such as joy, focus, and forgiveness, and they heard about the forgiveness God offers us through faith in Christ.

Our own Wilson and Mary Winn Nelson along with help from new Taylors FBC members, Herb and Cathy Howell, helped host VBS at Trinity Baptist, the mother church of Southwinds.  Wilson reports that VBS brought 4 professions of faith, including one adult.  Praise God for calling Wilson and Mary Winn to Calgary!  We connected with Bill and Barb Kennedy, also called to share Christ and minister in the Calgary area and accross Canada.  Bill and Barb are playing a vital role in the Canadian Baptist Convention.

The Current Canada Team (including two of our own college students, Will Greer and Patrick Kennedy) orchestrated a block party in Silverado, the fourth neighborhood incorporated in our vision for Calgary.   Approximately 250 people were expected to attend the Tuesday night event, and God surprised us all with a neighborhood crowd of around 450-500 people!  That is a lotttt of hotdogs! People of many nationalities showed up and asked questions like, "How often will you do this?" "Do you have other activities for kids?" "Where does your church meet?"  Will Greer prayed that God would "show out," and He definitely did!  Please continue to pray for God to work and move in power through our partnerships in Canada.
